PDFMax is a free collection of online PDF tools that lets you merge, split, compress, convert, rotate, watermark, and OCR your documents without creating an account or paying a subscription. It is designed around a single principle: you should be able to work with your files quickly without handing them over to anyone.

What PDFMax is

PDFMax brings dozens of everyday PDF operations together in one place. There is no registration wall, no trial countdown, and no hidden upsell. Open a tool, drop in a file, and download the result. Whether you need to combine a few scanned pages into a single document, shrink an oversized PDF before emailing it, or pull editable text out of a scan, the tools are ready to use immediately and free of charge.

What it is built on

PDFMax is powered by mature, well-audited open-source software rather than a proprietary black box. The core document engine is Stirling-PDF, a feature-rich PDF toolkit released under the AGPL-3.0 license. Around it we use a stack of trusted libraries, each chosen because it is open, transparent, and widely reviewed:

• Stirling-PDF (AGPL-3.0) — the engine behind merging, splitting, page manipulation, watermarking, and many conversions.
• pdf.js — Mozilla's renderer used to preview and read PDF content directly in the browser.
• Ghostscript (compiled to WebAssembly) — handles high-quality PDF compression, with the heavy lifting able to run inside your browser.
• Tesseract — the open-source OCR engine that recognizes text in scanned pages and images, making them searchable and selectable.

Our privacy-first philosophy

Privacy is not an afterthought at PDFMax; it shapes how the product is built. Wherever it is technically possible, work happens entirely on your device. Tools powered by WebAssembly such as compression and rendering can process your file locally in the browser, so the document never leaves your computer at all. For operations that do run on our engine, files are handled only for the duration of the task and are never sold, shared, or handed to third-party advertisers or data brokers.

We do not require an account, we do not build advertising profiles from your documents, and we do not use your files to train anything. You stay in control of your data from upload to download.

Supported platforms

PDFMax runs in any modern web browser, so there is nothing to install. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, Android, and iOS using current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. Because the interface is responsive, the same tools are usable on a desktop, a laptop, a tablet, or a phone.

Building on an established open-source stack means our document handling is transparent and continuously scrutinized by a global community of developers, rather than relying on claims you cannot verify. Every connection to PDFMax is encrypted over HTTPS, the site is free of intrusive advertising, and we honor the AGPL-3.0 license that the Stirling-PDF engine is published under.
